CANNABIS EDIBLES; DOSAGE AND TYPES (THC PREPARATIONS) PLUS RECIPE

A patient will. have a much different experience when consuming edible preparations. Specifically, a person can orally ingest a much higher dose than consuming via smoking/vaping. This higher dosage potential has both positive possibilities and negative consequences, depending on circumstances.

A novice user should start off using 10 mg or less of THC products. Wait at least two hours to feel full effects. As a person becomes more familiar with the results, the dosage may be increased as tolerated. Patients often find that a dose of 20 mg. to 40 mg. is about right. Some patients find that up to 100 mg. is appropriate, but such a high dose for a novice user would be unwise.

High dosage effects can mimic the effects that people experience with hallucinogens, so caution is definitely warranted when consuming edibles.

One distinct benefit of edible cannabis products is that the effects last much longer than when smoked/vaped. This long-lasting effect is particularly good for pain patients who typically have trouble sleeping. Cannabis edibles will stay therapeutically active for up to 10 hours; at the appropriate dose a patient may sleep soundly for 6 to 8 hours, without the need to awaken during the night to have another dose of opioid pain medication.

Edibles are often made by patients for their own consumption. A person can save money over buying products at dispensaries, but it takes time, and the dosage of each batch varies. Given that each batch can vary in its potency, it is best to sample a small amount so as to gauge the potency.

Here is a recipe for making your own edibles:

Ingredients:

4 ounces of quality micro-bud or shake, or one ounce of bud

1 1/4 pounds of butter or coconut oil (any oil will work, including tallow and lard, but I prefer butter or coconut oil).

one gallon water

Method: Simmer the above three items together on low for 8 to 12 hours. Press out the oil/butter and water from the plant material; dispose of the used plant material and refrigerate the liquid overnight. The next day, lift the hardened cannabis-infused product off of the water, and dispose of the water. Scrape off the detritus from the bottom of the oil/butter to provide pure product.

At this time you have refined, infused cannabis-infused butter or coconut oil. You can then use it in. your favorite recipes.

Approximate dosage: 30 to 50 mg. per teaspoon. Use this dosage per teaspoon to calculate what each unit of your edible product should be.
